Mission

The news wasn’t bad. One of the Evolved citizens of the Earth Sphere had escaped the Conclave. Products of genetic manipulation by old, mad gods, the Evolved were our brethren. Long ago, humans had become something more than human. The first Generators, creators of a new world, a new reality that came from the very soul of humanity. Unfortunately, that soul was corrupt at its core. The single, irreducible characteristic of humanity, the humanity that became the Generators, was hubris. The Generators self-confident belief in their power to create and re-create reality in their image was unbreakable. The Earth was what eventually broke.

The Conclave left before the cataclysm. Humans who trusted nothing but technology fled to the stars, running from the horrors the Generators released on the world. The Conclave sought to keep what it thought was worthy and damned the rest to the brutal care of the mad gods. The ensuing cataclysm destroyed the Earth, re-wrote the lives of all the remaining people and animals of the planet, and cast the Generators into the void of space.

Eventually, after hundreds of years passed, the Earth rejuvenated itself. We, the Earth Sphere Systems Alliance, spread out from our broken planet. Humanity rose out of the ooze for the second time, but this time others came with us. The Evolved.

The leopard on the news was one of the Evolved. The animals that had been experimented on and improved by the Generators became the Evolved. Those who were of at least human intelligence became citizens of the Earth Sphere. The Evolved and the remaining humans of Earth joined together and put aside the old dominance of nature, deciding instead to live alongside it. Not that there was really much of a choice, or even a thought, to live at peace with all the intelligence creatures of the planet. We had lived side by side for hundreds of years after the cataclysm, why wouldn’t we continue to do so once we were strong enough to rise up again?

The Conclave had captured the Evolved feline, held it prisoner. When it escaped, the leopard had brought news of renewed interest by the Conclave in pre-cataclysm settlements, settlements like Nissus. The spy, Xander had also brought secret communications with it. The news did not mention more than that, but the subtext was clear. The leopard had escaped and brought with it information about the Conclave’s interests in the Generators. Specifically about the planet Nissus, where my parent Association was currently engaged in salvage.

My Association was small, part of a larger group. We were archeologists specializing in pre-cataclysm civilization. The subtext of pre-cataclysm is ‘Generators.’

Nissus was a Generator planet, one they had taken after despoiling the Earth. Nitara-che had arrived from Nissus and decided to stay here, on Earth Station Lambda. The cargo of artifacts that came with Nitara-che were set to be our next cataloging effort once we finished with our current lot of work.

The last part of the news was the part that troubled me. The leopard, Xander, had brought more than just news of the Conclave’s interest.
